Observing the improvisation class of acclaimed choreographer Jill Johnson, a close collaborator for three decades of fellow American choreographer William Forsythe, Dalton began to apply Johnson’s directions to the dancers to his own drawings. Developed into sculptural form, the work is free from direct representation. It anchors a moment in space, capturing something of the freedom of improvisation, and the tension between abandon and control.
