Rushing Form for the Atlanta Falcons Stadium, USA
Bronze and steel
320 x 545 x 65cm
Hugo Dalton has been commissioned to create a major sculptural work for the Atlanta Falcons’ stadium as part of a stadium-wide art programme curated by the Savannah College of Art and Design. The commission was initiated by stadium owner Arthur Blank and involved an extended residency with the team during the pre-season.
Dalton spent two weeks in residence with the Atlanta Falcons, observing players during training sessions and working directly from life. During this period, he developed a distinctive drawing technique using multiple pencils held in one hand to record speed, force, and complex directional movement. This method allowed Dalton to capture the instantaneous, dynamic motion of the athletes, conveying both their physical power and the fluid grace of their movement.
The resulting drawings formed the foundation for a series of hand-cut maquettes, developed in close collaboration with HOK, the stadium’s architects. These three-dimensional studies are literal translations of Dalton’s observational drawings, preserving the energy and immediacy of the original marks.
The final wall-mounted sculpture was fabricated in steel, coated in bronze, and polished to a mirror finish. Installed in the executive entrance of the stadium, the work reflects both the surrounding architecture and the vitality of the game, transforming live athletic performance into a permanent sculptural form.
