Savannah College of Art & Design

During a residency hosted by the Savannah College of Art & Design, held in Lacoste in the south east of France, Dalton created a series of drawings in and around the mountain village. Drawing plants intrinsic to the region’s identity, he sought to evoke their evolved associations; vines, signifiers of bounty and festivities, are dwindling due to global warming; the iconic Aleppo pine, conjures connections to the migration crisis and human suffering. Another piece references Lacoste’s notorious former resident, the Marquis de Sade: the perspectival corridor is based upon a drawing of the door of his castle. As light projections on the ancient village walls, the plants convey beauty and fragility, the tunnel of light is at once enticing and foreboding.
