Eleusis
The starting point of the artist’s work with the Fitzwilliam Museum was the magnificent faceless caryatid that formed part of a temple to Demeter, the Greek goddess of Agriculture.
The agricultural context of the object started a dialogue between the artist and Rothamsted Research, an agricultural research laboratory. Dalton created a series of archi-sculptural responses to visiting the institute’s GM laboritories and reflecting these observations back into the Greek and Roman galleries. Included in display cases at the museum were items used at Rothamsted’s laboratories and wheat plants grown there.
