All of Hugo Dalton’s works find their origins in drawing from life. Working with pencil on paper he looks to capture the energy in any given situation allowing it to take on new life; he seeks to anchor and find visual form for the intangible. Clarity of both intention and articulation emerges through process and in his practice Dalton’s works on paper have evolved into light drawings, wall paintings and sculptures.

In 2009 Dalton was invited by acclaimed British choreographer Christopher Wheeldon to create a stage set for the performance of his work ‘Rhapsodie Fantasie’ at Sadlers Wells. Dalton undertook a residency with the company, drawing the dancers in rehearsal and from this he developed a series of light projections for the stage. Since then, over the last decade, Dalton has undertaken numerous other collaborations with professional dancers and musicians, staging live drawing events, which forge new and fascinating relationships between line, dance and sound.

Since 2017 Dalton has been working with agricultural research laboratory Rothamsted Research, the first part of this collaboration was exhibited at the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, 2018. He has an ongoing project with the Metrological Department at the University of Reading and The Royal Collection Trust to create pop up exhibitions in Care Homes in the UK. This project is curated by Dr Clare Carolyn, and was presented at the European Geoscience Union, Vienna, 2022.
