Royal Opera House
The Clore Theatre
Charlotte Edmonds, Choreographer
Dancer Joseph Sissens
This Live Drawing performance was created as part of the celebrations for the reopening of the Opera House after the redesign by architects Stanton Williams.
“I draw directly onto a TV screen which is playing a prerecorded version of the ballet. This is filmed and projected at large scale onto the stage whilst Joseph performs in real life. These entities are in a constant and evolving duet. I draw structures which are formed of both the dancers’ movements and knowledge of the choreography, the dancer moves in and out of these structures. This leads an audience to questioning which is past and which is present. During the finale three ‘digital Josephs’ dancer appear with the ‘real-life Joseph’ creating an exhilarating and perceptually challenging moment in the audience’s mind… the confusion of modern life with too many things to attend to”.
